My Favourite Pastime - Holidays

Ruth Bass shares her reasons why a motorhome helps make her holidays memorable:

"Whether it’s to do with motorcaravanning as a child or student travels I’ve never really shaken off my wanderlust, that feeling of freedom you get with a pack on your back and passport in hand. When Geoff and I had our first child we swapped our tiny tent for a tatty Toyota Hi-Ace and explored family-friendly Europe. A second child and other commitments forced a break, however, until 12 years later when we needed a second car.

Brainwave! Campervans depreciate less than cars! Soon we were holidaying in a 10 year old Autosleeper Trident with a tent alongside for the kids.  It was a bit of a squash, but the whole family loved it. Then, on our first family skiing holiday we noticed French and Spanish motorhomes parked in Andorra. This combined with a life-changing health scare convinced us to blow a nest-egg on a fully-winterised coachbuilt Laika.

It’s all too easy to lose touch with teenagers and I’d like to think that the time we’ve spent cycling, hillwalking, windsurfing and skiing have helped keep us close. Once the boys stopped coming it was time to sell the beloved Laika. Give up motorhoming though? Not on your life! We’re hooked, planning more long trips, frequent short breaks, and, if all goes according to plan, our very own gap year!

With that in mind we decided on a continental A-class Carthago, more suitable for two to live in comfort all year round. It ticked all the boxes and we really love the practical layout. It’s supremely comfortable, and as warm as toast in winter thanks to the top notch insulation and the Alde “wet” central heating.  Although it wasn’t cheap, we holiday economically and can save for that gap year. We love our “hobby” and have made new friends, too. I’m only glad we didn’t wait till retirement!"
